The three Big food groups that you need to steer clear of are;
- Dairy
- Breads
- Fruit and Fruit juices
Some other foods that may also cause a problem are, Vinegar, Mushrooms, processed foods, coffee and tea and dried, processed or pickled meats.
Some of these may be able to be reintroduced once your yeast infection has been eliminated. It is critical that when re introducing foods from these groups back into your diet that you do that in moderation and only one food type at a time.
If you have suffered from a yeast infection it is almost certain that you will not be able to go back to your old eating habits. However if you re introduce the food types that are least likely to cause a yeast intolerance ONE at a time you will be able to identify those foods that you can add on to your Candida Diet Food List as safe foods and rule out those that you know for certain to cause you a re occurrence of the yeast intolerance symptoms.
There are also a growing list of alternatives to these groups, particularly with Dairy and Breads.
Breads; Quinoa, Millet, Amaranth, buchwheat and brown rice, are all alternatives to the breads and grains you may be used to eating.
I would recommend that in the early stages of your Candida Yeast Free Diet to eliminate all Grains and breads and after a week or 2 introduce these as alternatives.
Dairy;There is an ever growing list of Soy Products. In addition Goats milk can be an effective substitute as well. Olive oil, avocado, tahini and hummus can be great substitutes for butter and margarine.
Once you have your yeast infection under control it is really all about taking it easy and testing out different foods to add to your Candida Diet Food List, that you know are going to be safe to eat.

Can the beginning stages of a yeast-free diet cause a yeast infection?
I have been on a Yeast-free diet combined with the Ultra Simple diet for one week (due to joint pains and hives from candida). On day 7 I woke up with a vaginal yeast infection. I have read that the dying yeast can cause fatigue, muscle aches and nausea to name a few…but nothing about yeast infections. I just want to know if this is going to keep recurring if I continue on this diet.
Minimising Candida Die Off Symptoms.
It is quite normal for yeast sufferers to experience a higher level of their yeast overgrowth symptoms during a yeast free diet program which will cause what is known as the Candida Die Off stage.
Naturally this is very unsettling and can be quite discouraging. It is critical to understand what is causing this situation. If you do not get a good grasp of why this happens and be prepared to deal with it, then your attempt to beat your yeast infection once and for all is likely to fail.
The usual Candida die-off symptoms are;
- Lethargy and constant tiredness,
- foggy brain, black spots in vision,
- gastro-intestinal distress such as nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation,
- low grade fever, headache, sore throat, normal cold and flu symptoms,
- body itchiness,
- muscle and or joint soreness.
These symptoms are resulting literally from an overgrowth of yeast in the body. As this process occurs, Candida or Yeast die-off, there is a large number of toxins being released. Usually more than your body can efficiently deal with.
Subsequently your systems eliminatory pathways become over burdened and this results in constipation and other symptoms associated with the digestive tract. At the same time your body’s cleansing organs can not cope and this affects your general sense of well being, you feel tired, sore and may even have some headaches.
The good news is that this is often a short term situation, 1 to 2 days, although in cases where the yeast overgrowth is systemic, a longer period can be expected. The positive motivation to take into a yeast cleansing diet plan is that these symptoms are a sign that your body is breaking down the overgrowth and the die off is actually happening. Stick with it and you will soon be free of those symptoms for good.
Here are some things you can do to minimize the effects of the Candida Die Off. If you apply these strategies, you will reduce the effects of the Candida die off dramatically. In cases where the yeast overgrowth was low to medium, it is common to have very minimal to no discomfort at all.
- Lower or preferably eliminate anti fungal prescriptions or remedies. Adjusting your diet is the key to long term success with yeast infection.
- Drink lots of water. Water helps to flush your system out, getting rid of those nasty toxins. A glass of warm or hot water every 45 minutes and no tea and coffee does not count!
- Try to rest as much as you can. Set aside a week where you limit the expectations of life and get to be early.
- Use Molybdenum and Panthethine to help neutralize the toxins created by the candida die off.
- Natural remedies like Candidate can also help to minimize the effects of the toxins.
- Replace your grains with a small amount about half a cup per day of brown rice. This works a treat, but remember you need to chew it very well as it does not digest if not chewed thoroughly.
- A suana, hot shower or bath can also be a great treat at the end of the day. However even more importantly sweating is another way of helping your body to get rid of toxins. Tip add about 200 grams of Epsom salts to your bath once every 4 days, enjoy but don’t be surprised if you feel a little flat the next day, the salts really do help to flush your system.
Beware of signs of constipation. You really need to be doing No. 2’s at least daily. If you suspect you are constipated, or even if you don’t but just don’t want to go there, here are some anti constipation tips;
- A glass of Hot water first thing in the morning.
- A tablespoon of olive oil on an empty tummy.
- Ground flax seeds in a glass of hot water.
- Keep your fiber intake up of course.
- And finally if you are constipated and none of the above is working, you could always consider a Colonic irrigation…
On that note, I wish you well and remember that although the Candida die Off phase can be uncomfortable, it is only for a short time and a bit of short term pain is always much better than the long term suffering of ongoing Yeast Overgrowth.
